1982 Jeep CJ-7 Jamboree Edition
It's a Limited Jeep® Thing! |
Here are some common questions and answers (if we know them) about the Jambo.

Questions
How many Jambos were produced?
According to the original marketing material, 2500 Jamborees were scheduled for production (the 1982 Jamboree Brochure shows #2000). We think it is unlikely that 2500 were actually produced. Take a look at the Jambo Registry. Out of over 124 Jambos none is over #701. This would be very surprising if 2500 were actually produced. 82jambo.com believes that fewer than 1000 may have actually been produced and fewer than 200 are still in existence.
We are in the process of collecting VIN numbers for each Jambo on this site. This will allow us to create a plot of Jambo Plaque Number against Production Number. Here is a we have so far:

The red dots are for VINs we have. The blue are at Jambos for which we only have the Jambo plaque number.
You can see that buy the end of the 1982 production run, we are only up at around Jambo #700. Please send us your VIN so that we can better understand how many Jambos were produced! We don't post VINs. We will only post the above plot.
What color were the Jambos?
According to the 1982
Jamboree Brochure, Jambos could be ordered in Topaz Gold Metallic (2H) or Olympic
White (9B). The Olympic White appears to have been quite rare, as we only have
eight confirmed Olympic White Jambos (out of 113 Jambos) on the registry (#76,
#495, #511, #591,
#624, #627, #701,
and #???).
According to the 1982
Jeep Brochure, only Waggoners could also be ordered in Topaz Gold Metallic,
meaning that no other CJ could be this color in 1982. Here is the 1982
Color sheet.
What was the original tire size?
According to Capt. Pete, the original tires were P235/75R15s. This size is listed on his window sticker. The 1982 Jeep Brochure lists the Arriva P225/75R15s as standard on CJs. The P235/75R15s are listed as an option. These tires were standard on the Laredo. Jim Allen lists the original tire size as 31x10.5s, but we believe this to be a mistake. According to the 1982 Jeep Brochure, these tires were not available on any Jeep vehicle.
Did the Jambo have a full size spare?
No. According to the 1982 Jeep Brochure, the CJs came with a P225/75D15 Polyspare. CJs came with a spare tire cover to match the top. However, Jambos came with a very special spare tire cover, as shown in the Jambo Sales Brochure. Try finding one of these!
What was the original rear end gear ratio?
According to the 1982 Service Specifications, the 2.73 was standard on all CJs. Capt. Pete's window sticker also lists the 2.73 as standard. Jim Allen lists the 2.73 as standard, but the 3.54 and 3.73 as options. We believe this to be a mistake.
Did any Jambos come with a V8?
No. AMC quit offering the V8 in CJs after 1981. The Jambos came stock with the 258 I6, which, according to this window sticker, was a $150 upgrade from the 151 ci 4-cyl. See the 1982 Jeep Brochure for detail.
Did the Jambo have a hard top?
No. Neither a hard top nor hard doors were factory approved options. See the sales brochure.
How much did the Jambo cost?
According the Capt. Pete's window sticker the original cost was $11,449. That is over $30,500 in today's dollars. The Jambo option appears to have added $3,185 (around $8,500 in today's dollars) to the base price of $7,765. This is 40% increase over the base price.
Did the Jambo have chrome or black rocker trim?
The official sales brochure shows black rocker trim. However, every other Jambo picture we have shows brushed aluminum rocker guards. Some owners believe that the original trim was black anodized aluminum and that the black has simply worn off over time. Some original owners say that their Jambo did not come with black rocker trim.
How was the limited supply of Jambos allocated?
We are not sure. Capt. Pete does not believe any Jamboree was special ordered and that AMC made them all the same. Certain dealers got them as perks for good sales records.
What happened to all of the Jambos?
That is what we are trying to figure out! See the Jambo Registry.
Is there a list of Jambo VIN numbers?
We are not sure. Perhaps this could be dug up from Jeep?
Where was the optional fire extinguisher mounted?
This was a dealer option so the location may vary. However, we believe most were mounted on the roll bar as shown on Jambo #301. Jambo #152 also has marks on the roll bar pad in this location.
Where can I find Jambo hood decals?
Tom Timbario (#418) had his made by Austin Jeeps (www.goldeneagledecals.com). Tom writes "[the decals were] a perfect match to the original. He usually doesn't keep them in stock, but I received mine in about 2 weeks time. Can't remember how much I paid for it, but it wasn't terribly expensive."
Where can I get a Jambo tire cover?
Several Jambo owners (#152, #355, #418) have purchased spare tire covers from a shop in New Mexico. These tire covers are outstanding. Here is a picture of Dano's.

Here is the information from the shop that provides these (tell 'em 82jambo.com sent you):
